Cell ag outreach and public engagement
As part of Cell Ag UK, in spring-summer 2025 we have launched our outreach programme on cellular agriculture (cultivated meat & precision fermentation) topics, and future of food more generally.
For example, we have organised a well-received panel on the future of food at Eden Festival in Scotland in June 2025, and got a grant for school outreach in academic year 2025/2026.

Previously at Cell Ag UK I co-developed our UK ecosystem map resources, and led a project mapping the potential of UK universities to become cell ag hubs.
Cell & molecular biology outreach and widening participation
I’ve been involved in many public engagement initiatives during my PhD and postdoc, on circadian rhythms and other biology stuff, e.g. at LifeLab/European Researchers Night. I tried popular science writing briefly, and interviewed Madeline Lancaster about her work on brain organoids – read here on Serious Science.
During my PhD and postdoc, I worked for the University’s Postgraduate Outreach scheme (run by the Admissions Office) as a Session Leader, developing and running taster lectures, supervisions, and other academic activities for open days, summer schools, and other programmes such as HE+ and Melanin Medics. Many of these were focusing on pupils from backgrounds underrepresented in HE.
I also worked as a tutor for Brilliant Club, a UK charity that aims to increase access to HE for disadvantaged students. There, I developed a syllabus for a set of tutorials on circadian rhythms, designed a handbook for it, delivered the tutorials, and assessed students’ progress on the programme with homework assignments, providing feedback and support as required.

Other teaching and mentoring
In my home country, Latvia, for many years I have been involved in an extracurricular science education project ABFS that organises an annual summer camp for middle- and high-school students. There, I have created and conducted various hands-on science projects for the pupils, as well as provided pastoral support for kids and more recently supervisions for junior teachers and youth leaders.
